High blood pressure
Not everyone who is overweight or obese has high blood pressure, but scientific evidence shows there is a link between excess weight and hypertension.
Where that link exists, it is above all the fat around the abdomen that increases vascular resistance, and with it the work the heart has to do.
Because the heart works harder, blood pressure rises in the arteries, which drives blood pressure up.

Cardiovascular disease
Where excess weight is the result of an unbalanced, over-rich diet, high cholesterol often comes with it.
High cholesterol is a risk factor for atherosclerotic plaque, which is the origin of cardiovascular disease — making it both more common and earlier.
Losing surplus kilos, hand in hand with a healthier way of living, reduces the risk that high cholesterol represents.

Type 2 diabetes
Developing type 2 diabetes requires a genetic predisposition — that is, a close relative (father, mother, brother or sister) with type 2 diabetes.
But family history is not the only determining factor. After heredity, it is chiefly the way we live that brings on type 2 diabetes.
Alongside excess weight, we find lack of physical activity. These are the main factors behind the early onset of type 2 diabetes.

Sleep apnoea
Sleep apnoea, as is well known, is far more common in people who are overweight — most often for mechanical reasons linked to that weight. In such cases, losing some or all of the surplus kilos allows these patients to return to their former state, meaning the sleep apnoea disappears and the equipment, if it had been prescribed, can be given up.

Certain cancers
The link between excess weight and cancer is still little known to the general public.
The WHO report on obesity in Europe from May 2022 states that, in the years to come, in some countries, « obesity will overtake smoking as the leading risk factor for preventable cancers » (7 April 2023).
Some cancers can therefore be linked to excess weight. Be careful: this does not mean that everyone who is overweight will develop cancer.
The phenomenon is explained by the fact that the more fat accumulates in the body, the higher the risk of developing certain cancers.
The effects of losing weight
Losing 10, 15 or 20 kilos has a considerable preventive effect on the development of all these weight-dependent cancers.
Excess weight and cancer
—> Which cancers are concerned?
– colorectal cancer,
– kidney cancer,
– cancer of the oesophagus and stomach,
– pancreatic cancer,
– cancer of the liver and gallbladder,
– breast cancer in post-menopausal women,
– cancer of the uterus and ovaries.
The risk of colorectal cancer is thought to rise by around 15 %, for example.
In France in 2015, an estimated 19,000 new cancer cases a year could be attributed to excess weight — 5.4 % of all new cancer cases.
—> What mechanisms are involved in these cancers?
Excess body fat increases cancer risk.
1. In women, fatty tissue readily stores oestrogen.
Women who are overweight or obese are therefore thought to be at greater risk of developing a hormone-dependent cancer, such as breast or endometrial cancer.
2. Another mechanism: obesity often comes with insulin resistance and higher insulin levels, which may encourage certain tumours to develop.
3. Finally, excess weight is associated with low-grade but chronic inflammation of fatty tissue.
This tissue produces various inflammatory molecules (cytokines, adipokines).
These molecules play a part in the multiplication and differentiation of the cells in which cancers take hold.
